With the fall and winter sports seasons behind us North enters a new era for the baseball team.
After losing one of the most athletically talented classes last year a lot of sports have learned to adjust to the change. Baseball will be no different after losing eight seniors last season they will be looking to lean on a combination of veterans and new players without a lot of varsity experience.
Senior Jace Martinez, a second baseman since his sophomore year is one of the veteran players. In regards to the off-season, Martinez said, “during the offseason I have been working to put the bat on the baseball looking to hit on all sides of the field.”
Martinez believes that “team chemistry is the biggest thing for us.”
Martinez is ready to help lead this team to a playoff berth.
A positive and underlooked player this year for the team is senior Mason Tanner, who will get his first varsity reps as a starting pitcher.
On the upcoming season, Tanner said, “ it’s all about the grind to be honest, me and all the other players just have to stay on it and keep up the good work and be one as a team”.
Down the stretch play in the bottom innings of games is key for each team and this is what Tanner thinks this team will rely on the most in pressure situations. “Just each other, that’s all it’s gonna come down to, we need each other to win these games, like Jace said we are the underdogs in this so we just got to stay together.”
When discussing the new look of this team, head coach Zach Harris said,“ There's a lot of guys stepping into new roles, we lost eight seniors so there's a lot of roles to be filled in leadership and on the field, but so far so good”.
In terms of any emerging leaders on the team Harris said, “what's awesome with this group so far [is] it hasn't necessarily been one or two guys, it's really been as a group collectively.”
Harris added, “ This team will have the ability to overachieve. we don't really have anyone on paper that jumps off the page and everybody outside this building knows their name, you know, and in New Hampshire baseball there is a lot of guys that people do know about so while we don't necessarily have that, i think this team has the ability to overachieve.”
North baseball is excited to enter the new season. North kicks off their season on April 10 against the Goffstown Grizzlies on Goffstown’s turf.
