Nashua North and South hockey teams will combine next hockey season to form one team between the two Nashua high schools.
Nashua North is currently combined with Souhegan, while Nashua South is combined with pelham. With the number of players declining over the years it makes sense for the two Nashua teams to join forces.
Last season the North-Souhegan Saber-Titans only had five Souhegan hockey players and the South-Pelham Kings only had two players.
With many North and South players already having friendships with one another, it makes sense that these players would be eager to combine as one team.
Tommy Dratch, a sophomore on North Souhegan was not so phased by the rivalry. “I do want North and South to combine because if we do, the team will be better and even have a chance of winning the state championship,” Dratch said.
With North Souhegan having an entirely winless recent season and South with a 5-12 season, any help they get will improve their record.
Brody Sice, a senior on the North hockey team stated, “I think the teams should have combined years ago because both teams have been struggling to make a whole three line roster every year and we would have been a playoff contending team. With Nashua as one team we would also have longer practices making them more than the 50 minutes we had in previous years.”
Both the Nashua hockey teams haven’t been to a championship since 2002, but with the merge, the players and coaches are hoping for the chance to make it there for the first time in over two decades.
With the teams combined, what will this mean for Battle of the Bridge? With the merger of the two hockey teams there will no longer be one for hockey, leaving football and basketball as the biggest sports for Battle of the Bridge.
The merge also brings good news for high school girls. With the idea to make one Nashua boys Division 1 team, it brings room for an all girls team. Souhegan currently has a girls team but the Nashua High schools don’t.
Lisa Gingras, Nashua athletic director, proposed the idea to have a Souhegan tri-op girls team with North and South.
Merging the two teams is what will make it possible for these teams to succeed with the declining numbers and records. The coaches and players are all in for the two Nashua teams to be one.
