North offers final scholarship workshop for seniors

by Sophia Scribner

Nashua High School North is offering its final scholarship workshop on March 28 in the career center.

These workshops were previously held throughout the month of March on Thursdays during e-block.

According to a flyer distributed by the guidance department, the workshops provide help for any in-progress scholarships, and supply printouts of additional scholarships for members of the senior class.

Allison Lynn, guidance secretary at Nashua North, is spearheading the workshops. Her job includes receiving the scholarships from community organizations, posting all information to Naviance, and putting the completed applications together for the scholarship committee to make their decisions.

Ms. Lynn estimates that there are around 80 scholarships available to seniors.

She encourages all students to apply for any scholarship they qualify for. In 2023, roughly 50 North seniors were awarded scholarships.

When considering a student’s perspective, the prospect of applying for scholarships may seem daunting. For seniors choosing to attend a college or university, finding and applying for scholarships is an integral part of deciding the path they’ll take to pursue higher education.

Maggie Dustin, a senior at North, is in the process of applying for ten scholarships. Her motivation? “The idea of being in debt is scary,” she says. “Thinking about having to pay for college makes me so stressed.”

Dustin is not alone in feeling this stress. According to a survey conducted by collegedata.com, monetary concerns are the biggest stressors for 15% of high school seniors. But stressed students should know that they’re not alone in this process. The guidance department created the workshops to provide support for seniors feeling overwhelmed.

Despite the workshops ending on Thursday, there are still many scholarships available for seniors to find independently.

Ms. Lynn encourages all seniors to check Naviance for additional scholarships, most of which are due in April and May. One scholarship, offered by the Rotary Club, has up to $10,000 to give away to eligible seniors.

The North Community scholarship is also available on the Guidance Google Classroom until March 31. Students can fill out the google form to be matched with a variety of potential scholarships.
