Six Of Crows Review
By Mia Powers
“Six Of Crows”, written by Leigh Bardugo, can easily be argued as the best YA Fantasy novel to have ever been written. The story follows a gang of six brilliant, young criminals in the streets of Katterdam, each of which have their own distinct and well written personality. With a new, dangerous drug that can enhance a Grisha’s powers (people with “magic”), the Crows are presented with an offer they can’t refuse; They must break into the highest security prison in the world and bring back the scientist who created the drug. If they succeeded, they were promised thirty million dollars.
But things don’t go as planned. Bardugo crafted a well thought out, intricate story that takes you through the winding streets of Ketterdam, all the way to the dangerous Ice Court in Fjerda. Along the way, the six unlikely friends must navigate rival gangs working toward the same thing, ruthless Fjerda landscapes, and each other.
But, if you’re not sold yet, the bond between the group is unlike any other. These six teens are orphans, criminals, and runaways. “What bound them together? Greed? Desperation? Was it just the knowledge that if one or all of them disappeared tonight, no one would come looking?” (Leigh Bardugo, Six Of Crows). Each character had a deep, individual background. No two were the same in any stretch of the imagination.
But, if you’re wondering; “Where does the fantasy aspect come into this?”, Bardugo has that covered too. The Grisha can manipulate matter, which in the Grishaverse is called the “Small Science.” Nina has the power to stop and start people’s hearts, which comes handy in a fight. Her powers are constantly used to their full potential.
The series that takes place before this, called Shadow And Bone, exists in the same universe, a few years before Six Of Crows, and it goes much more in detail of how Grisha power works, and just the general world building of the universe. And if you do wish to read Six Of Crows, I would highly suggest that you read the Shadow and Bone trilogy first.
If you were thinking about trying out this book, do it! It is a book you surely cannot miss in your lifetime. It may be YA, but I feel any age could enjoy this high stakes, thrilling heist. You will absolutely fall in love with the story. Once a Crow, always a Crow.
