Students Attempting To Exit School Causes Unsafe Parking Lot Environment

Students at Nashua High School North express how getting out of the North Parking lot affects them. The North parking lots express many dangerous habits made by the north community.

Getting your driver's license is an exciting time in a teen’s life, but many people don’t understand the amount of stress getting out of the parking lot can be.

Sometimes students have practices, after school activities, and other events that may need for them to be present and on time.

Getting out of the North parking lot is half the problem; it may be the one lane exit, or the roundabout, or even the students and parents, But getting out of the parking lot has been an issue for many high schools across the country.

Donaldson Law states there are “on average around 50,000 accidents that happen in high school parking lots”. This is due to the amount of inexperienced drivers that may be distracted by talking to their friends, and on their cell phones while operating their vehicle.

“Many students are on their phones and not really practicing safe driving while in our parking lots,” says assistant principal Katie Closs, regarding the behavior of students present in the parking lot.

Closs sees this behavior happening every single day at school. Closs states “we have had maybe 2-4 minor accidents so far this year. The school does not deal with that specifically, and we pass it onto the SRO and Nashua Police Department.”

Not only does the school not have much control on what happens in the parking lot there isn’t much they can do

Closs states “Beyond the buses, it is hard to ‘speed up’ the process much more. The fact of the matter is, the buses are always going to need to take priority due to the level of impact their schedules have on the district as a whole. Also there is only one way in, and one way out and the rotary and the constant traffic on Broad St. do not help the situation.”

This essentially means in the future the problem might not get better.

Students who have dealt with their experience in the North parking lot express how difficult it is to exit safely, and the difficulties they had. Vibhav Sharma who is current Vice-President of the Senior Class of 2023 and Emma Pearl who is current senior has many experiences in both the junior and senior lot with other drivers.

Sharma states “he has been in many close accidents” showing that drivers need to be extremely careful when driving their expensive vehicles.

Sharma has had his license for almost two years and described drivers as “inexperienced”.

Pearl had a similar experience and stated “people are mean, and they don’t give the opportunity for traffic to flow” regarding the behavior of the people who drive.

Admin reminds people that “ the admin team is doing its best to help clear out the lots efficiently and peacefully”.
