High School Dress Code and How Students Feel About it

By Rebekah Savage

Nashua High School North Students speak out on how the school dress code affects them. From students to teachers, dress code is widely talked about and widely diverse. Every student dresses differently yet not all students get the same punishments or rights. Some students and teachers were interviewed on their thoughts about the dress code and how it makes them feel.

Some teachers thought of the school as a more professional place where kids should be “dressing for success,” as math teacher Mrs. Sylvain put it. . She believed that dressing nice for the day will set you up for success and a better outlook on the day.

French teacher Madame Herrara believes that “students should dress like they would for an interview so once they get into the real world they know how they’re supposed to look.”

The dress code has many faults and is not very balanced among genders. Every student has a different style and only some students are able to express themselves through their clothing.

The boys dress code is very laid back, whereas the girls dress code goes over every aspect of the body. Straps must be as thick as a dollar, shorts must go to the knees, no shoulders showing, no stomachs showing, something that many girls find absurd.

There is a certain point where the dress code becomes too protective that people stop following it.

Some girls stated that “they wear whatever they want because at the end of the day everything breaks the code.” (Kaylee, Anei, Emalee).

When interviewing the boys they all had the same answer, the dress code doesn’t affect them. The only thing senior Jackson Nardone would change would be “the ability to wear freedom of speech/expression clothing.”

Other guys had no input because they don’t have to worry about the dress code. One complaint both teachers and girls in particular did have with the boys dress code was the sagging pants. “Why do the guys get to have their entire boxers out and we can’t have our shoulders showing? That’s more distracting.” (Bekah Savage).

There are many different arguments and opinions on school dress codes and how to make everyone feel comfortable. At the end of the day is there a way that everyone can be happy?

Unfortunately the answer to that question remains unanswered due to the many different dress codes enforced by all different schools. No matter how strict or not strict a dress code is, students and staff will have their own opinions on it. The real question is, can the dress code be more equalized between male and female?
