Study Habits for High School Students

Developing an effective studying habit as a High School student is essential. It can be very demanding to run through four classes a day without feeling like crumbling down. Balancing your academic life, social life and maybe work life can be a challenge as there are only so many hours of the day. Learning good study habits can make it all more manageable. Here are some habits that can make a big difference:

1. Identify your learning style.

As you navigate through high school, you may encounter academic challenges. To overcome these, it is helpful to identify what learning style suits you best (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, read/write) and try to implement it into your study sessions.

2. Make time for studying!

Rather than cramming the night before a test, make sure you review your material regularly as it is assigned. Going over class material nightly will help you improve the understanding and retain information for longer. You will see positive changes in your grades.

3. Manage stress

Don’t let school overwhelm you. Make time for friends, family, and self-care to avoid a burnout. Set aside at least an hour after school to do something you enjoy, whether it’s watching your favorite show or going out for a walk. Create an agenda so you will have a set schedule of everything you want to achieve in your day.

4. Study methods

Try to experiment with some of these study methods to see if they suit you. Here are some of the methods:

The Cornell Method consists of note taking during class, split the page in half and leave one side empty for later. After class, try to minimize your notes in your own terms to simplify the understanding on the blank side of your notes.

Mind Mapping connects ideas visually to see how it relates to other topics. It helps you know how much you actually know. This technique can help you retain information better as your brain is active as you make connections with one another.

Flash cards Use flashcards as a game to make learning more interactive and memorable.

Quizlet gives us multiple ways to practice and learn. You can create flashcards, a test, and a matching game. It is a tool that helps you practice and review multiple ways

Academic success can be earned in many different ways. Everyone learns at different paces and in different ways. Avoid comparing your grades to others, as everyone’s path to success is different.Focus on your own academic progress and unique learning experience.
