Numerous NH women throughout history have made incredible impact in their fields, especially locally. One of those extremely important figures would be Christa McAuliffe. Now, who was she?

Christa McAuliffe was a high school social studies teacher from Concord High School, in New Hampshire. In 1985, McAuliffe was selected from more than 11,000 applicants to become the first teacher in space as part of NASA’s Teacher in Space Project. McAuliffe’s dream was to bring the thrill of space exploration into the classroom and to inspire students to dream big.

However, McAuliffe tragically lost her life while on the space shuttle Challenger on January 28th, 1986. Unfortunately her cause of death on the Challenger was from it exploding after being launched. Despite that, McAuliffe still carries on. She helped pave the way for women in the science and educational fields.

In her memory, there are numerous scholarships and fellowships, along with schools such as the Christa McAuliffe School in Concord, and centers, named after Christa McAuliffe.
