With the FIFA World Cup set to begin on June 11th, anticipation is building worldwide as fans prepare for one of the largest international sporting events. For many fans the tournament is regarded as a celebration of national team pride, emotion, and culture. The world cup brings people from all countries and backgrounds together.

However, alongside the excitement, the event has also raised concerns ticket prices, climate issues, and safety problems for international travelers.

Ticket Prices and Accessibility

This year’s World Cup will feature 48 national teams. Due to this, there is going to be high demand for tickets for people from all over the world. For most fans, though, tickets are all but a pipe dream seeing how high the prices are. Prices reportedly range from $500-$4000. By comparison, the 2022 world cup tickets ranged from $100-$1600, even though they were still expensive, the difference is staggering.

Soccer is dubbed the ‘world sport’ for a reason, it is a sport for the people. However, with higher prices comes a different atmosphere. Traditionally the World Cup attracted a diverse crowd from all backgrounds, whether it was die-hard fans or people who just wanted to see a match. Now with higher prices it changes the environment to just those affluent few who can even afford to com

Heat and Climate Concerns

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across three different countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with matches scheduled in 16 host cities. Between these cities and countries there is going to be a wide variety of weather.

Take Dallas for example, it can get up to over 100 degrees which could make it unsafe for athletes, high temperatures and humidity can lead to serious health problems such as heat stroke. Extreme heat is said to be an issue in 14 out of 16 of the stadiums. Due to these issues, FIFA has set mandatory three minute cooling breaks during each half of a game and cooling benches for substitutes and staff.

The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature will also be used to help determine physical heat stress, heat and humidity on the body. If the WBGT is above 28 and nears 32 then extreme precautions must be taken to prevent heat stress.

Despite the measures FIFA has been taking, 20 experts believe that it is not enough. These experts from the U.K, Canada, America, Australia, and counties from Europe have asked for FIFA to do more. Such as longer cooling breaks, a delay of matches when the weather is above 28 WBGT, and better cooling facilities for players.

Travel and Fan Access

Concerns have also been raised about travel accessibility for international fans (Intls). Many Intls are having a difficult time traveling to the U.S. to see their country play due to travel bans and stricter border controls. President Donald Trump implemented a travel ban on 19 countries last year. Some of these countries on Trump's banned list are participating in the World Cup such as Iran, Haiti, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Even though the players and staff are able to play, their fans are unable to come watch. Not only that, but fans from other countries such as Egypt or Senegal will have a difficult time getting visas and will also have more restrictions if they do come to the U.S.

With these bans and high restrictions fans are feeling anxious on traveling to the States. On top of that, Trump has stated that I.C.E (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) will be present at matches. This will require fans to have to bring multiple forms of documentation to prove that they are here legally and will spark even more anxiety. The tournament is supposed to be exciting and high energy but, with these extreme restrictions and bans, it is leaving fans nervous.

Fans world wide are excited about the 2026 FIFA World Cup but there are still a multitude of issues regarding the major tournament. There needs to be more precautions from FIFA regarding player and fan safety. Whether it has to do with cooling breaks/stations or travel restrictions more has to be done. The World Cup is one of the largest sporting events in the world so it is important for FIFA to make the tournament enjoyable and safe for everyone.
