Patriots QB Controversy
by Zach Ouellet
After the injury to Mac Jones on the final game in Baltimore, and the injury to back up Brian Hoyer, Bailey Zappe had to step up and fill the role for the Patriots and striking New England with Zappe fever.
Throughout the remainder of the game in Green Bay and the following weeks, Zappe played out of his mind and Patriots nation fell in love with the fourth-round rookie QB. “The kid played out of his mind and displayed the Patriot’s way to a T. I hope Zappe continues to keep the QB1 role,” said fan and North senior Finn Mullaly when asked how he liked Zappe.
Throughout the two-game, he started and the game in Green Bay he was 51 for 70 with 516 yards and four touchdown passes.
The next week the Pats had a Monday night showdown with the Chicago Bears. The only thing different for this week was Mac Jones was ready to return to play against the Bears. Coach Bellichick gave Mac the starting nod over the hot hand in Zappe.
It wasn't long until Mac’s struggles before his injury crept over into his post-injury play. Mid way through the second quarter Jones threw an ill-advised pass that lead to an interception. Once again it was Zappe time.
During the final minutes of the second quarter, the Patriots seemed to have new life. “Once Zappe came in those 5 minutes after the switch was electric and showed how teh team rallied behind him.” taken from an interview with Trinity Santana who was in attendance for the Monday night game.
after the half things went off the rails and the Patriots ended up getting left in the dust in a huge defeat. The next week Patriot’s fans didn't know who should start and were very opinionated on the matter.
Going into the game against division rival the New York Jets it became evident that Mac would get the start and he played very mediocre and great defense and kicking from Nic Folk made up for the very average QB play.
Now going into this next week it seems clear the Patriots organization is sticking with last year's 15th overall pick Mac Jones. That doesn't mean the fans of New England still want to push this into more of a controversy than it needs to be.
