The very first Government shutdown happened back in the year 1981, since then we have had five major government shutdowns in the years 1995, 1996, 2014, 2019, with the most recent one being this year 2025. This is the longest recorded government shutdown in history, taking forty three days to end. |
This year’s government shutdown started on October 1st. Every year, both chambers of Congress have to approve a spending plan. However, because there weren't enough lawmakers willing to agree on funding for medicare and food stamps, Congress failed to pass a new plan.. This deadlock ultimately drove the government to shutdown.Republicans had tried for the past 40 days to reinstate government operations, but no democrats were willing to go along with the Republicans’ proposal
During this shutdown many parents had to stop working because they were not being paid. This started affecting families in negative ways by them not being able to have a stable income to provide for each other especially affecting bigger families, whether it was them needing food or them getting clothing and housing.
This issue has affected some of our very own students here.
“Nothing quite hits you as hard as when your superhero dad starts talking about loans, or not being able to afford gas, or not turning the heat on,” a student shared, speaking anonymously,
That is only one student but, there are likely many more students facing very similar problems whether it's in our school or other schools.
On November 12th after forty three days of the government being shut down it had ended. The Democrats finally agreed to join the Republicans to approve a new spending plan. This new bill is going to last until January 30th.
This agreement is going to be beneficial for federal employees that went without pay. The government plans to issue back pay starting around Sunday November 16th. This means that all the employees that went without pay will most likely get checks due to the inconvenience of the government.
